Breath Centered Yoga: The Viniyoga Tradition

“Yoga to All”

The grandfather of this practice, T. Krishnamacharya, was a venerable yogi and healer whose mission was to bring the promise of “yoga to all”, and in particular its healing qualities for the individual. Following in this tradition, breath centered yoga and meditation offers simple techniques to tap into the body’s innate healing system and improve the mind’s focus and clarity.

Sessions, both private and group, include these powerful tools of yoga: movement with the breath, pranayama (mindful breathing), and meditation. The meditative aspect of this practice may employ the techniques of sound, mudra (hand positions), and visualization to focus the mind in a positive direction. As these techniques are applied consistently over time, improved focus has the potential to change the way we view the world around us and encourages a more nurturing and nourishing lifestyle overall.

Classes are in a style and at a pace that appeals to beginning and older students, and yet is dynamic enough for the experienced student looking for a deeper challenge. The practice  uses a therapeutic form of moving in and out of each asana (physical posture) repeatedly, allowing the body to be coaxed into the depth of a pose by the use of breath, which informs the body in all movements. These dynamic postures are linked together in a specific way that brings the practitioner into a deep state of ease and grace while building muscle tone and flexibility, along with tranquility in the heart and mind.
